A Great Base For Days Out

Toddington is one of those villages that's small on the map but well-placed for exploring. You're five minutes from junction 12 of the M1, fifteen to twenty minutes from Milton Keynes and Luton, and ringed by some of the most popular attractions in the Home Counties. You can easily spend a full day at a single attraction, or string together two or three across a weekend.

Here's our roundup of what to do, where to walk, and where to eat when you're done — grouped by what sort of day you're after.

Major Attractions

The big-ticket days out — all within a short drive of Toddington village centre.

4.8 miles · Family · Half to full day

Woburn Safari Park

Drive-through safari with lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos and more, plus a foot safari area with monkeys, sea lions and a road-train through the African plains. One of the most popular family attractions in the region — well worth a full day. Car-friendly (you stay in your car for the drive-through section). Located just a short drive down the A5.

7.1 miles · Family · Full day

Whipsnade Zoo

ZSL's countryside zoo sits just outside Dunstable on the edge of the Chilterns. Home to elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers, cheetahs and hundreds of other species across 600 acres. The free on-site steam train and lookout over the Chilterns make it a proper full-day out. A favourite for families, and quieter than a lot of the London-adjacent options.

4.5 miles · Active · Half day

Go Ape Woburn

High ropes courses, zip wires and Tarzan swings through the trees at Woburn Centre Parcs (you don't need to be a resort guest to visit Go Ape). Multiple course levels from Junior up to Treetop Challenge for older kids and adults. Book ahead — it gets busy on weekends. Go Ape Wendover is another option at 13.5 miles if Woburn is full.

4.5 miles · Gardens & heritage · Half day

Woburn Abbey & Gardens

Historic stately home with formal gardens, deer park, and a café. The abbey itself is a grand day out if you like country houses and history. Gardens are open seasonally — check in advance. Easy to combine with Woburn Safari Park if you want a mixed animals-and-culture day.

Walks & Outdoor Spots

Free, easy-access and good for when the weather's cooperating. All within a short drive — some walkable from the village if you're up for it.

Dunstable · Free · 1-3 hours

Bison Hill & Whipsnade Heath

Scenic walks along the Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Heath, including Bison Hill itself — one of the highest points in Bedfordshire with views stretching across the Vale of Aylesbury on a clear day. Mix of open chalk downland, woodland paths, and kite-flying spots. Free parking at the National Trust Dunstable Downs visitor centre.

Dunstable · Free · 30 mins to 2 hours

Dunstable Downs

Part of the Chilterns AONB — open chalk grassland, gliding club overhead, and gentle walking trails suitable for most abilities. Popular with dog-walkers, families and kite-flyers. Good stop on the way to or from Whipsnade Zoo (they're only a few minutes apart).

Leighton Buzzard · Free/paid parking · Half day

Rushmere Country Park

Greensand Country woodland trails, play area, café and picnic spots spread across 400 acres. Well-marked paths of varying lengths make it work for young families and proper walkers alike. About a 15-minute drive from Toddington.

Mentmore · Free · 1-2 hours

Mentmore & Ivinghoe Beacon

For a slightly longer walk, Ivinghoe Beacon offers one of the best viewpoints in the Chilterns — a steady climb up from the car park and the views at the top make the effort worthwhile. Pair with lunch in Mentmore village.
